pictorial visualization and empowerment
(Utilising Soft Systems Methods to create a defined, refined definition of what sustainability is)

For example

Community-centered development
Concept modeling: computer usability, testing and evaluation
Prototyping: testing , evaluating and receiving feedback
Nurturing the community

a synthesis utilizing Soft Systems Methods to refine the concept of sustainability

Ethnographic data will be redacted, transcribed and designed into the following digital visual pictures, a dynamic map of sustainable resources, a set of real-time indicators and groups of future-prediction climate change scenarios. To enable rich pictures to develop I will build various ‘work-in-progress models’ so that I can continuously work with the community to find out what they want to engage with. Next, I will enter a prototyping stage. A prototyping stage will require further collaboration, interaction and feedback from the community. Ethnographic field work, conceptual modeling and prototyping will enable a resource to be created that will continue to seek feedback from the community.

The ethnographic fieldwork will become part of the Soft Systems Investigation (1994, Preece). The focus of this investigation will be Community-centered development (CCD). This type of development focuses on the community’s needs before technology and social planning is chosen. Technology and social planning are both key elements in building an online community. CCD developed out of User-centered design (USD) in which designers of software started to focus on users needs not just the design of technology. CSD follows similar process as USD but in addition it looks at subjects like how you welcome and nurture the community. This involves community members ‘seeding’ the idea and bringing it to life. Importantly the methodology of CSD requires the help of multidisciplinary teams, for instance those that comprise social psychologists and sociologists.
